In recent decades, Spanish society has experienced major transformations in the way couples formalize their marriage ties and in the number of years they actually cohabit. The latter is closely linked to increases in life expectancy after the age of 65, which as well as having a direct impact on the duration of a couple’s cohabitation has also impacted such critical concerns as pensions, health and long-term care.

Last year’s Global Risks Report warned of a world that would not easily rebound from continued shocks. As 2024 begins, the 19th edition of the report is set against a backdrop of rapidly accelerating technological change and economic uncertainty, as the world is plagued by a duo of dangerous crises: climate and conflict. Underlying geopolitical tensions combined with the eruption of active hostilities in multiple regions is contributing to an unstable global order characterized by polarizing narratives, eroding trust and insecurity. At the same time, countries are grappling with the impacts of record-breaking extreme weather, as climate-change adaptation efforts and resources fall short of the type, scale and intensity of climaterelated events already taking place. One of the most important financial decisions that pension participants make concerns how they access their pension assets when they terminate employment with their plan sponsor. Their choices depend both on own preferences and the options offered by their retirement plan. This paper examines both past and future pension withdrawal choices for those with defined benefit (DB) and defined contribution (DC) pensions, separately. Our data are drawn from a set of pension distribution questions we fielded in the Understanding American Study. Results show significant differences in distribution choices based on the type of retirement plan, with individuals covered by DB plans significantly more likely to select annuities compared to similar employees covered by DC plans. We also find differences in how higher annual income affects annuity choices based on coverage by DB plans. Individuals with lower levels of financial literacy and lower annual income have less knowledge of basic pension characteristics.

El informe de Natixis mide cuatro pilares: el primero abarca varios indicadores referidos a la salud (esperanza de vida, gasto sanitario por habitante, etc.), el segundo maneja indicadores referidos a la estabilidad institucional y macroeconómica (tasa de dependencia, inflación, tipos de interés, presión fiscal, morosidad, deuda pública, etc.); el tercero, sobre la calidad de vida (calidad del aire, biodiversidad, etc.); finalmente, el cuarto considera la capacidad económica del sistema a la hora de garantizar un nivel de vida suficiente en términos materiales o económicos (renta per cápita, la igualdad de ingresos y tasa de desempleo). Los países mejor posicionados serían Islandia, Suiza, Noruega, Irlanda y Países Bajos, situándose España en el número 32 de los 44 países analizados, es decir, a la altura de Chipre o Hungría.
